Understanding Decorative & custom lighting

Choose the light effect as well as the object.

Glass, crystal, metal and translucent shades create different relationships with a room. Our custom-lighting team’s documented projects connect those material choices with scale, repetition and the setting.

Glass with visible texture

The Bangkok residence project uses a handmade textured-glass pendant. Review the glass close up and in the room: colour, texture and visible connections all contribute to the result.

Small elements, a larger composition

The Shenyang show-house installation uses crystal beads and stainless-steel wire to form suspended birds. A representative element establishes the craft; spacing and suspension heights create the wider composition.

A softer translucent shade

Rice-paper lanterns appear in the RUXU Sugar House project. The shade, seams, frame and light source should be reviewed together, both lit and unlit.

Compare the possibilities

Develop the fixture at three scales.

Find the detail that suits your room. Each reference pairs a design idea with the specification behind it.

Fixture or repeated element

Approve the form and lit effect before repeating it across an installation.

Decorative lighting: material, scale & controls

Choose the decorative material and scale, then coordinate the light source, driver, controls, suspension and maintenance access. A glass or crystal reference shows a design direction; the complete fixture needs its own approved configuration.

Read the detailed guide
What should the first lighting brief contain?

Share room photographs or plans, ceiling heights, furniture positions, reference images, quantities and destination. Explain the atmosphere and the views that matter before developing the fixture dimensions.

When are shop drawings and samples useful?

Drawings explain dimensions, supports, connections and assembly. A material sample or representative prototype helps resolve colour, texture and lit appearance that the drawing cannot show.

What needs coordinating with the local installer?

Agree mounting conditions, loads, voltage, controls, dimming compatibility, driver location, access and assembly requirements for the actual fixture. Keep the installer’s scope clear before production.

A closer look

Specify light, control and installation together.

Choose the form and the light effect in parallel. A decorative fixture also needs an electrical specification, a compatible control arrangement and a practical installation plan.

Decisions worth resolving

Identify the luminaire type and evidence.

State fixed or portable use, destination, electrical supply and installation environment. Have the responsible reviewer identify the evaluation required for the actual design. Keep the luminaire model separate from any certification claimed only for a component inside it.

Why this matters

UL describes separate programme scopes for fixed luminaires under UL 1598 and portable luminaires under UL 153.

Name the driver and control combination.

Specify the driver, dimming interface and proposed control. Agree the low-end dimming behaviour and any mock-up needed before quantity production. “Dimmable” on its own leaves the system and the expected result unresolved.

Why this matters

The driver and control interface must be checked together. Some drivers require a specific control system and are unsuitable for line-voltage dimming.

Lighting-control notes ↗
Review materials under the selected light.

Look at a lit sample alongside the timber, stone or fabric it will illuminate. For colour-critical projects, ask the designer what colour-rendition information is needed alongside colour temperature. Keep the test configuration with the approved sample.

Why this matters

IES TM-30 evaluates several aspects of colour rendition, including overall and hue-specific effects.

Before the order

A few things to clarify.

Practical questions for your brief, your quotation and the next decision.

Discuss your requirements →
When should I choose custom rather than catalogue lighting?

Choose custom development when the size, composition, material or installation cannot be met by an existing model. Start with the room and intended effect, then agree the design and approval stages.

Does a decorative light come with all electrical parts?

Not necessarily. List the light source, driver, controls, mounting parts and any remote components in the quotation. Confirm electrical compatibility for the exact fixture.

How do I source custom lighting?

Send the brief to Foshan Supply. Our specialist lighting team reviews the design, samples, drawings and fabrication requirements; the custom-lighting hub shows the process and documented project references.
