Understanding Acoustic wall & ceiling panels

The visible finish is one layer of the acoustic design.

Slats, grooves, felt and fabric offer different visual languages. To specify absorption, look behind the face at the backing, infill, cavity and mounting arrangement.

Grooved timber appearance

The Source 14 catalogue lists grooved boards with veneer, melamine, HPL, paint and metal face options. Board dimensions and the installed build-up are separate choices.

Slats on felt

The PET-slat example combines decorated MDF slats with PET backing. The visible rhythm comes from the slat layout; the assembly behind it still needs to match the intended acoustic design.

Felt, fabric and suspended forms

Flat and shaped PET felt can create a softer wall treatment. Fabric absorbers and suspended baffles offer other forms for a room where wall area or ceiling treatment is part of the brief.

Compare the possibilities

Choose the assembly as well as the appearance.

Find the detail that suits your room. Each reference pairs a design idea with the specification behind it.

From inspiration to specification

The wall behind the panel matters.

Acoustic panels: absorption, diffusion & isolation

Keep sound absorption, diffusion and sound isolation separate. Compare the panel face, perforation or groove, backing, cavity, infill and mounting as an assembly; texture alone does not establish acoustic performance.

Grooved / perforated wood

A patterned face with a specified backing arrangement

Check the full tested mounting and cavity.

PET / fabric-faced panel

A different material and surface direction

Confirm thickness, backing and intended assembly.

Diffuser

A shaped surface intended to redistribute sound

Do not equate diffusion with an absorption coefficient.

Isolation products

Separate construction and junction treatments

Do not use a decorative wall panel as a substitute.

From the look to the detail

The details that make the choice work.

Use these questions to turn a preferred look into a clearer specification.

What does an acoustic test actually describe?

One catalogue chart describes a 15 mm panel with 50 mm infill at 32 kg/m³ and a 50 mm rear space. Its result belongs to that assembly; it should not be transferred to a panel installed in a different way.

Will an absorbing wall make the room soundproof?

Absorption addresses reflections and reverberation within a room. Sound isolation between rooms is a different design task involving the enclosing construction, openings and transmission paths.

Where should the treatment go?

Start with the room use, dimensions and existing hard surfaces. Ask the project’s acoustic designer to define the required treatment and location, then coordinate the selected panel assembly and installation detail.
