A closer look

Ask what the sample actually represents.

A good material sample is labelled with its construction, finish and intended use. Approve a sample group under the proposed light, then retain enough information to identify the supplied product and any allowed variation.

Decisions worth resolving

Record the substrate as well as the face.

For timber panels and cabinetry, identify the surface, core, thickness and exposed edges. For metal, identify the substrate and finish process. Keep the sample code and production reference together so a matched colour does not hide a changed construction.

Why this matters

EPA’s guidance distinguishes regulated composite-wood materials incorporated into finished goods.

US Environmental Protection Agency ↗
Choose the care and use criteria with the look.

Ask what can touch the surface, how it is cleaned, whether it will be wet, and what wear is expected. Request the selected product’s supporting information. Keep the specific stone, tile or textile care instructions with the approval.

Why this matters

The Natural Stone Institute explains that the composition of a natural stone affects its care requirements.

Approve the effect under the intended light.

Compare the real material group with a representative luminaire. Record the light source and viewing conditions beside sample photos. A screen image can communicate a direction; the physical sample and agreed variation define the visual approval.

Why this matters

IES TM-30 evaluates multiple aspects of a light source’s effect on colour rendition.

Before the order

A few things to clarify.

Practical questions for your brief, your quotation and the next decision.

Discuss your requirements →
Is a sample enough to confirm a product?

A sample is one part of approval. Link it to dimensions, construction, performance evidence, hardware and drawings as relevant to the item.

How should I record an approved finish?

Give the sample an identifier, photograph it under agreed light and record the supplier, finish, specification revision, decision and date. Keep the physical sample available for comparison.

Can different suppliers match the same finish?

They can work from the same reference, but substrates, sheen and production processes can differ. Review their samples together and record the variation you accept.
